When it comes to installing a toilet, there’s no denying that the process can often be quite confusing and frustrating – especially if you have limited plumbing experience. While hiring a professional to do the job is often a wise decision, there’s no harm in giving it a go yourself if you’re confident in your abilities.
However, to give you a helping hand, we’ve compiled a few useful tips that’ll help you get the job done quickly and smoothly. Keeping this in mind, let’s take a closer look at the tips we have for you.
Tip 1 – Ready the flange
Once you’ve removed your old toilet, you’ll need to make sure the flange is ready and prepared for the new toilet installation.
You’re likely to find that the flange is in a poor condition, so it’s worth taking the time to clean it up as much as possible. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to purchase a repair kit for the flange – so if there are any cracks, these should be addressed before you proceed any further.
Tip 2 – Set the ring
Next, you’ll need to place a new wax ring on the flange, which gives you a perfect seal between the flange and the new toilet you’re installing. If you’re fortunate, this should be a simple process, but you may need to make a few adjustment along the way to ensure an adequate fit.
Tip 3 – Place your toilet
Now here comes the fun part – where you’ll be aiming to line up your toilet and ultimately keep it nice and level for the final installation. You’ll begin simply be ‘setting’ the toilet, which mostly requires you to line up the bolt holes with the flange. Once everything is lined up correctly, you will push down on the toilet firmly, making sure it’s settled into the flange nicely.
Tip 4 – Bolt it down
Once you’re happy with the placement of your toilet over the flange, it’ll be time to use your washers and nuts to fix the toilet securely to the bolts which reside either side of the flange. These washers will be constructed of nylon in most cases, and you should only hand-tighten them, rather than using a stronger tool that could cause you to lose threads.
Tip 5 – Make sure it’s level
Finally, you’ll need to use a spirit level to make sure the toilet is perfectly level – because nobody likes using a toilet which is leaning to either side! If you’ve followed the tips in the guide correctly, then you should find the toilet is fairly level, and only a few micro-adjustments are ever likely to be needed.
If you find the toilet is rocking from side to side, then you’ll need to shim the toilet on the lower side. You can usually do this with a few simple washers, or you could even purchase special plastic toilet shims which are specifically designed for this purpose.
Overall, installing a new toilet can be a fairly simple job – and if you do your best to follow the tips in this guide, you certainly shouldn’t have any hassle when it comes to correctly installing your new toilet.
